Blog Post #1

My initial thoughts on How the Garica Girls Lost Their Accents, is that the main plot and story revolve around the sisters and their experiences leaving their native homeland in the Dominican Republic, and coming the United States, where they have many new experiences that differ from what they have experienced from their homeland.  From the family tree it is evident that the sisters have an enormous family, and that it must have been hard to leave them all to go to the United States.  On their father's side of the family it is evident that in the Dominican Republic that they were either highly regarded or frowned upon.  I say this because the term "conquistadores" in spanish refers to the "conquerors", so it tells me that their family was either from a great line of spanish soldiers/sailors, or the natives of the Dominican Republic frown upon them for what they potentially caused to the natives who were there prior to spanish invasion.  After reading the first few pages, the back page, and the family tree, I believe that I will not really enjoy this book because I do not have a lot of interest in books that I believe to be initially read as a "chick flick".   I am usually not intrigued by books that revolve around emotion, and family fighting.  Also, for predictions I believe that based on the title of How the Garica Girls Lost Their Accents, I believe that the book will be based on the sisters assimilating to the culture of the United States, and the problems will be based on whether or not they continue to practice the heritage, holidays, and tradition of their own culture.  As for the overall prediction of the novel, I believe that the sisters, and family will drift apart from time to time, but there will be some tradition that unites the family every year and makes them feel like a real family again.
